Resolving Stress and Worry


Stress is the result of placing demands or pressure on yourself. A little bit of pressure can be productive, give you sense of drive or motivation, and help you to perform better at something. However, too much pressure or prolonged pressure can lead to stress, which is unhealthy for the mind and body. The mind and body need time for rest and recovery. 

Everyone handles stress differently , and some people may have a higher threshold than others. Too much stress often leads to physical, mental and emotional problems. 

In the UK, anxiety and depression are the most common mental health problems, and the majority of cases are caused by stress. Research by mental health charities also suggests that a quarter of the population will have a mental health problem at some point in their lives. 

In situations were you feel stressed, you releases chemicals, including cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline. These create the 'fight or flight' feelings that are designed to help us deal with the situation. However, when you're in a position were fighting or escaping is not possible , these chemicals are not used.

If these chemicals accumulate due to not being used, they effect the body. A build-up of adrenaline and noradrenaline increases blood pressure, heart rate, and the amount that you sweat. Cortisol lowers your immune system and it fails to function properly. It also releases fat and sugar into your blood stream.

Stress can be the results of physical demands or mental demands placed on us by ourselves or others. In stressful situations our thinking lacks clarity and our emotions may be out of balance. 

Worry is the mental practice of predicting the possibility of stressful and negative situations. People who engage in excessive worry can see it as a positive way of being ready for any situation, planning how they might cope if x happens. Over time excessive worry just becomes the norm . Excessive worry places high levels of stress upon you and can result in high levels of anxiety. 

The result of too much stress can have a variety of effects such as outbursts of anger, disturbance to sleep patterns and appetite 

There are lots of ways to deal with stress, but when your stressed it often feels like you have very few choices available to you. This is why it is often very helpful to talk to someone who can support you and help you consider your choices and find better ways of dealing with your levels of stress. 

During your therapy sessions on stress we will work together to develop a positive plan to dealing with and reducing your stress levels. 

  • Learn and look at ways you can take time to de-stress and relax
  • Learn and develop a better mental state that provides more support in stressful situationsHighlight the key stress points and find creative solutions to dealing with them
  • Highlight and challenge potential negative thinking that works against you.
